Children cannot be made aware young enough of the danger and suffering that fire and burns can cause.
Help Burn Kids vzw is therefore always ready to support elementary schools in Flanders by providing free teaching materials and on-site fire and burn prevention lessons.
Free teaching materials
In coordination with the Burn Foundation, HBK vzw distributes free teaching materials such as “do-boxes,” “preschool boxes” and other documentation.

De educatieve doe-doos Fire!
Fire!
Fire! is suitable for second grade elementary school children.
Children learn through play a number of principles by which they can prevent fires and burns.
After all, a first step is to make them aware of dangers and to teach them how to react if something does go wrong.
The accompanying workbook and parent leaflet offer the opportunity for the prevention message to permeate the home as well.
Explanations for teachers are summarized in the enclosed manual.

The activity box Don’t Play with Fire! is specially created for children in first, second and third kindergarten.
Topics such as learning to distinguish hot and cold, recognizing and avoiding hazards, learning about the fire department and evacuation are covered in detail.
A workbook is also provided for the 5-year-olds.
The information brochure for parents aims to make fire safety and evacuation discussable at home as well.
The comprehensive manual, divided by age group, supports teachers with clearly described scenarios.

Prevention lessons
If required, the HBK Fire and Burn Prevention Team will come on site for 1 day to teach prevention lessons.
Topics covered include: causes of burns, types of burns, the fire triangle, smoke detectors, escape plan, ….
Lessons last 40 min for 1st grade, 50 min for 2nd grade and 60 min for 3rd grade, respectively.
Afterwards, students are given the opportunity to go into the smoking room, under supervision.
There they experience what it feels like to be in a smoke-filled room and learn how best to leave this room, with a chance of success.
This can be an educational experience and supplement to the learning they already receive in school.
The ideal would be if this could be planned into a project week around prevention.
